Clarke County formed from Frederick County in 1836 and is named for Gen. George Rogers, a Revolutionary War hero.
It is bordered to the west by Frederick County, the north by Jefferson County (W.Va.), the east by Loudoun County, the southeast by Fauquier County and the south by Warren County. The Blue Ridge Mountains create the eastern boundary with Loudoun County. Nearly 18 miles of the Shenandoah River flow through Clarke County.
Berryville is the county seat and is located about 60 miles west of Washington D.C.
Clarke was the home of Virginia Gov. and U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr. and Thomas, Sixth Lord Fairfax.
