WINCHESTER — A driver was killed in a head-on collision about 100 yards east of 3318 Papermill Road about 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
The elderly man, who hadn’t been identified late Saturday night, was westbound in a Chevrolet Suburban with two men and one women in the sport utility vehicle. The SUV was struck by an eastbound Ford F-150 pickup truck that veered left into the westbound lane, according to Sgt. Bryan Smith of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
Smith said it was unclear why the pickup driver, who he didn’t identify, lost control. The crash happened in a straight stretch of road about a quarter mile east of Shawnee Drive in daylight where the speed limit is 45 mph. There were no skid marks evident in the road in the area the pickup driver was headed before the collision.
The three SUV passengers and the man in the pickup were hospitalized at Winchester Medical Center with serious injuries, according to Smith who didn’t identify them. He said they all appeared to be wearing seat belts.
Frederick County Fire Chief Dennis D. Linaburg said firefighters needed approximately 30 minutes to extricate the SUV passengers and the pickup driver. See Monday’s Winchester Star for further details.
