GORE — A 56-year-old St. Louis man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a tractor trailer hit the motorcycle he was riding, authorities said.
Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Warren Gosnell said the crash was reported shortly after noon at the intersection of Carpers Pike (Va. 259) and Northwestern Pike (U.S. 50).
Gosnell said 58-year-old Odilon Reyes, of New Jersey, was driving a 2016 Freightliner north on Carpers Pike but was unable to stop as he approached Northwestern Pike and crossed both lanes of that highway.
As the truck came across the highway, Gosnell said it struck a 2015 Triumph motorcycle.
Gosnell said that before it came to a rest on its side on the shoulder of Northwestern Pike, the truck also clipped a 2013 Nissan Altima, but the driver of the car was not injured and the car suffered only minor damages.
The motorcycle driver, whose name has not been released, suffered internal injuries and was pronounced dead around 1:25 p.m. in Winchester Medical Center, Gosnell said.
Gosnell said Reyes claimed the brakes of the truck had failed, but he was subsequently charged with reckless driving.
Gosnell said while his office is investigating the crash, the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit of the Virginia State Police is inspecting the truck to determine if there were any equipment failures.
The crash shut down both lanes of Northwestern Pike for nearly 30 minutes, Gosnell said.
