Athlete Spotlight: Sherando boys' soccer player Michael Leckie

Sherando High School 18-year-old senior

Sport: Soccer. Position: Center back

Hometown: Winchester

What do you love about soccer: I love the fact that it deals with life because in life you have to make decisions as quick as you can. You have to do the same thing in soccer because you don't have any timeouts. The only break you get is halftime, usually.

Most memorable moment in soccer: A couple of years ago on the travel team [Winchester United], I was playing against this bigger dude and he was kind of beating up on me on defense. The ref wasn't calling anything. At the end of the game, I had finally had enough and I just laid him out right in the dirt. The ref never called anything. One of the dads was like, 'It's about time you did that.'

Most embarrassing moment in soccer: Last year for Sherando, I was standing outside of the 18 off of a corner kick and the ball rolled out to me. I was thinking, 'Here's my shot. Let's hit this.' I completely just whiffed it. It went right by me and I missed it all.

Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: Eric Church, He's my favorite country artist and I really like his music; the Wright Brothers, with the kind of career I'm going into, I'm sure they could tell me a whole bunch of stuff. I've visited that museum at the Outer Banks and that is pretty cool; Samuel L. Jackson, he would be quite funny to talk to.

What’s the best athletic advice you’ve ever received: Make it so that you have no regrets at the end of your season, end of the game, whatever you want. You don't want to look back on it and say, 'Man, I wish I had done that or could have done that or blah, blah, blah.' Just, no regrets. (From Sherando coach Pat Anderson.)

If you could go on a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go: Probably Hawaii because of crystal clear waters and I've never been there. It would probably be pretty cool.

Favorite teacher: My Dowell J. [Howard] teacher Kevin Popp, mainly because he treats us kind of like we're young adults and at the same time also as students. He also tells us more about life and what we can do in life to grow.

Favorite athlete: Michael Phelps

Favorite team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Favorite movie: “Grown Ups”

Favorite TV show: “Friends”

Favorite song: “Homeboy” by Eric Church

Favorite food: Rib-eye steak

Plans after high school: I plan to go to Blue Ridge Community College and study aeronautics. One of my buddies did [aeronautics] about a year or two ago and he came back and told me about it. I was like, 'Hey, this is kind of cool.' I looked into it a little bit more and liked it.
