Athlete Spotlight: Clarke County girls' soccer player Keagan Bragg

Clarke County soccer player Keagan Bragg

Clarke County High School 18-year-old senior

Sport: Soccer. Position: Midfielder/forward

Parents: William and Tabatha Bragg

Hometown: Ashburn (moved to Berryville last year)

What do you love about soccer: I like how the sport can be really creative, and that it has high intensity.

Most memorable moment in soccer: I went to the ID camp at High Point University [in January], and they offered me a spot on the team. That was really exciting. (High Point is an NCAA Division I school in North Carolina that competes in the Big South.) They said I worked really hard and were impressed that even though I hadn’t played soccer for a team in while, I was still able to keep myself at a high level. That was a big compliment. (Bragg didn’t play a for a team in the fall or winter after her move to Berryville in August. The transfer from Briar Woods High School previously spent a year playing for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy team of the Washington Spirit, the professional team that plays in the National Women’s Soccer League.)

Most embarrassing moment in soccer: Probably when I sprained my ankle for the fourth time this year against Madison County last week. I felt bad for my teammates because I felt like I was letting them down even though it wasn’t my fault. (Bragg has taken a lot of contact from opposing players this year.)

Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: John Lennon; he was always talking about love and peace, and I think it’s really sad that he got shot so young. Vincent Van Gogh; I think his life was really fascinating. And Henry David Thoreau; just to get some wisdom in my life.

What’s the best athletic advice you’ve ever received: Probably from my dad. He always told me to be more assertive and selfish. Sometimes as a girl, you’re more worried about not hurting other players’ feelings around you, and it’s just good sometimes to take the ball yourself and be more aggressive.

If you could go on a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go: Italy. I think it’s really beautiful there, and I like the culture.

Favorite teacher: Mr. [Manish] Shaw, my A.P. psychology teacher [from Briar Woods]. He’s really funny and nice.

Favorite athlete: [Netherlands soccer player] Arjen Robben

Favorite team: FC Barcelona

Favorite movie: “Back to the Future”

Favorite song: “Night Moves” by Bob Seger

Favorite food: Watermelon

Plans after high school: I’m going in as an English writing major [at High Point], but I’m almost positive I’m going to change that because I still don’t know what I want to do. (Bragg has an academic scholarship and a scholarship from the leadership program at High Point. She will have an opportunity to earn athletic scholarship money as a sophomore.). I like High Point because they not only teach what you need to know in classes but also make sure you know life skills. And I like the president there. He has really good philosophies.
